Chapter 12

I lean back in the remarkably comfortable reading chair, its leathery skin squeaking from the minute adjustments I make to my posture. I lower the book I have been reading—one discussing in length the European Collapse—and hum to myself in thought.

“Maisy.”

The red-haired woman seated across from me, ensconced within the comfort of her own luxurious reading chair, fails to notice me calling out to her.

“Maisy,” I repeat, slightly louder this time around.

She jerks at my voice, head snapping up from the book she had lost herself in. She takes a moment, blinking in confusion as her mind slowly reattaches itself back to reality. “Sorry, what?”

“I have a question,” I ask, giving her mind even more time to refocus. She takes the extra moment, nodding when she has fully reoriented her attention to me.

“Is human history not replete with tales of powerful nations conquering weaker ones, outright annexing the conquered or plundering their resources?”

Maisy considers her answer, shifting her spectacles before nodding. “I guess. Why do you ask?”

“This situation in Europe,” I continue, tapping the book on my lap with the knuckles of my left hand. “I find it hard to believe that none of the major superpowers of your world have begun conquering it. The North American capitalists, the South American communists, the Japanese imperialists, the Australasian democrats… even some of the more influential dictators of Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia could make a play for Europe. Surely someone would have at least tried to retake the lost land?”

Maisy nods and hums, sniffing as she scrunches her nose up in thought.

“Post-collapse Europe just isn’t worth the effort to take from the devils and then rebuild, not right now at least. We here in the north are too busy butting heads with our communist neighbors in the south over Africa and the Middle East. The Japanese Co-Prosperity Sphere… they are too busy suppressing their rebellious colonies in Asia to think about further expansion. They are barely holding on to their territory even with our mercenary companies and surplus military hardware propping up their fragile empire. The Australasians? Still fending off the Japanese and fighting their never-ending war against the local emus. They won’t have any time or energy to spare on overseas adventures. The dictators you mentioned? They’re too busy invading their neighbors or culling internal revolutions to even think about expanding into what amounts to ruins.”

Maisy unclenches her nose, nodding to herself in satisfaction. I hum to myself, rubbing my chin. “And the devils ruling Europe? They are not amenable to simple trade or exploiting the natural resources of the area?”

Maisy replies with a hum of her own, taking the time to think before giving a verbal response. “Small-scale trade, yes. Wide-scale exploration and exploitation? Big no on that. They allied themselves with the fae, who are all about allowing nature to take its course and resisting the reintroduction of industry into Europe. Most of the fae and devils born around the world tend to be emigrated
